Born and raised in Buncombe County, JB is the oldest of nine children born to parents William Esley & Belva Howard (née Bradley), also natives of Buncombe County. Husband to Brenda, father to three children and a grandfather to five children, he is a Christian conservative with strong family values. He attends Emma’s Grove Baptist Church.
JB joined US Army at 17 and served two enlistments in the army and saw combat in Vietnam. He then went on to join the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in October 1969, serving in Polk, Cumberland, Lincoln and Buncombe Counties.
After his retirement in 1984, he opened a private investigative and security agency, which he continues to operate.
A graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, JB holds an Associates of Arts Degree in Police Science from Gaston College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice University of North Carolina Charlotte, and has completed 30 hrs on Masters Degree at UNC Asheville.
